In Person
Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26, 2025
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Instructor: Amber Ruth Paulen
This class sits at the intersection of craft and practice, where writing process and creating a convincing setting cross paths. Through freewriting exercises and reflection, we will investigate what makes our creative process unique and be exposed to the revision process of other writers. From our writing roadmap, we’ll turn to literal places and deep dive into some tips and tricks for characterizing setting using the short stories of Michigan’s own Bonnie Jo Campbell.
The second day will be devoted to workshopping new writing for setting and creating an individual revision plan to guide next steps. Students will leave class with a renewed understanding of how to make their settings zing and how to tackle their daily writing.
A short break is included each day.
Adult, all levels
