Celebrate Halloween with a unique tunnel book. Use book board, collaged images, and purple paper to create an inspiring book project. We’ll create cut-paper panels supported by paper gussets, creating the illusion of depth and perspective. The panels expand to reveal illustrated/collaged panels and are viewed through witch hat-shaped “windows”.
Required Materials/Students will need the following materials:
FOR COVERS:
• Book board for the front & back covers (Two pieces 7 inches wide x 7 inches high) and for the spine (2.5 inches wide x 7 inches high)
• Acrylic paint and 8-inch x 8-inch cover-weight paper (should you wish to create your own papers for the covers) or decorative paper
• One sheet of decorative paper/spans + covers interior front, inside spine, and inside back cover (16 inches wide x 6.5 inches high)
• Book cloth (approximately 8 inches high x 5 inches wide)
• PVA glue and brush
• Self-healing mat and X-acto knife
• Scissors
• Bone folder
• Scrap paper (to cover work surface when gluing)
• Metal Straight edge or ruler
FOR TUNNEL:
• Six sheets of cover-weight paper cut to 6.75 x 6.75 inches (witch hat opening in the center is approximately 5.5 w x 5.5 h inches/ witch hat template will be provided)
• Sheets of cover-weight paper to create 12 gussets (Each gusset measures approximately 2 inches wide x 6.75 inches tall and collapses to .50 inch x 6.75 inches tall)
• Random collage images printed on card stock to place in the tunnel (some images will be provided in a PDF)
• PVA or double stick tape
• Collage or decorative image for back of tunnel (adheres to inside back cover)
FOR INTERIOR/TUNNEL COLLAGES:
• Collage ephemera embellishment, including but not limited to: Stamps, small images, clip art, rubber stamps, torn paper, bits of type, pages from old books, labels, ribbon, hand or machine stitching, small scraps of paper, etc. (Random collage images will be provided in a PDF)
• Small poem or Halloween greeting to design and attach to the inside front cover
OPTIONAL MATERIALS:
• Markers, rubber stamps, colored pencils, crayons, vinyl lettering, ink, stamp pads, paper punches—anything you enjoy using to add color and decoration to your work!
