In its classical form in Korea, jiseung is a kind of paper basketry where strips of hanji are twisted and then twined into 3D shapes used traditionally as functional objects. In this class, students will learn a newer version of the building block of jiseung: the paper cord. They will review the appropriate types of hanji and the knife used to tear it. After tearing hanji into identical strips, they will learn an updated way of making two-ply rope as passed on from a third-generation jiseung master in Korea. At least one large sheet of hanji will be transformed into a long length of continuous paper rope, ready for use in a variety of book, fiber, and practical arts.
