In-person
Saturday, June 8, 2025
Noon to 2:30 p.m.
Instructor: Julie Kechele
Whether you are a student of calligraphy or not, this will be a fun time exploring the tools used to create calligraphic art. We will talk about what characterizes well-made letters, and examples of several major styles of Western calligraphy will be shown and demonstrated using various tools. However, the focus will not be on the letterforms but rather on experimenting with the tools to see what marks - letters and otherwise - they make. Once we have covered our papers with experimental marks, we will make a small box or artist trading cards from these explorations.
Materials List:
Inks, watercolors, and/or gouache (cheap mixing brushes), broad edge nib w/ holder (Speedball), pointed nib w/ oblique holder (Niko G). Variety of
midweight papers that will accept water media but not bleed much (such as Arches Text Wove, Canson Mi-Teintes, or mixed media) - 20x28
The instructor will provide other more specialized calligraphy tools - Pilot Parallel pens, folded pens, automatic pens, and other items (found objects, sticks)
Participants should bring any calligraphy tool kits or materials they have.
