In-person
Saturday, April 5 & 12, 2025
10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Instructor: Julie Kechele
The second in an ongoing "Calligraphy Foundations" series, this class will introduce you to basic terms and tools of calligraphy--beautiful handwriting--through a hand known as Foundational or Bookhand. This is a very legible, vertical (not slanted) hand that you will recognize as similar to the fonts we read or type every day. We will briefly cover the capital letters that are used with these letters but will concentrate on the lowercase forms.
We will start with simple letter forms and structures using pencils and then move to using broad-edged tools to add more design elements—correct proportions, thicks-and-thins, serifs—and practice words and sentences. We will try writing with various tools—dip pens, fountain pens, and markers—to find what works best for you. We will begin on grid (paper) and then use various art papers.
Any level of experience is welcome.
NOTE: If you write left-handed, please make a note on the registration form, as you will need slightly different tools and handouts.
