Beyond Technique: Underutilized Ways to Improve Your Creative Writing

In-person
Sundays: September 20 & 27, 2026
1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Instructor: Christopher Kramer

Most creative writing workshops emphasize familiar craft elements: plot structure, character arcs, dialogue, “show, don’t tell,” and sentence-level technique. While these fundamentals are essential, many writers plateau because they continue practicing the same skills in the same ways.

This workshop introduces techniques that help writers create richer scenes, stronger subtext, more memorable characters, and more sustainable creative habits. Participants will learn practical methods for generating complexity on the page while also exploring how time constraints, flow state, and creative play can improve productivity and artistic discovery.

Day 1: Underutilized Techniques for Creative Writing

Day 2: Generative Exercises and Revision Strategies for Deeper Work

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

- Create scenes with greater emotional and thematic depth

- Develop stronger subtext and psychological complexity

- Use unconventional descriptive techniques to enrich setting and characterization

- Borrow narrative strategies from music, film, and other artistic disciplines

- Experiment with generative exercises that promote creativity and flow

- Apply editing methods that strengthen clarity, pacing, and impact

- Build a toolkit of practical approaches for overcoming creative stagnation
