A Brief History of Falling is a book of poetry by Traci Brimhall. Three, multi-block woodcut images were created by artist Toru Sugita to accompany these poems.
This book was printed from hand-set Bembo type on Flurry cotton paper with a Vandercook Universal III press in an edition of 80 copies (20 casebound hard cover books, 60 soft folded paper cover).
This project was funded by an Arts Project grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Traci Brimhall
Traci Brimhall is a professor of creative writing at Kansas State University. She is the author of five collections of poetry, including Love Prodigal (Copper Canyon, 2024). Her poems have appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, The Nation, Orion, The New Republic, Poetry, The New York Times Magazine, and Best American Poetry. She’s received fellowships from National Endowment for the Arts, the National Park Service, the Academy of American Poets, and Purdue Library’s Special Collections to study the lost poem drafts of Amelia Earhart. She’s the currently the poet-in-residence at the Guggenheim museum and poet laureate for the State of Kansas.
Toru Sugita
Originally from Japan, Toru Sugita is an artist and professor who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is known for his black and white intaglio and wood engraving prints with strong architectural elements. He has exhibited his work throughout the United States and internationally. His prints can be found in public collections including the Brooklyn Art Library, the Royal Museum of Antwerp, Belgium, and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. Toru has traveled extensively in Latin America, the Middle East, and West Asia. His work is inspired by light and shadow and the temporary shapes they create. He specializes in glowing aquatint etchings, detailed wood engravings, and color reduction woodcuts. Toru is the illustrator of the award-winning book “Floating Lanterns and Golden Shrines.” He has recently exhibited his work in San Francisco, Seattle, and Kyoto, Japan. He is a faculty member at Diablo Valley College, in Pleasant Hill, California, and in charge of its printmaking program.
