Mary Heebner and Simplemente Maria Press

The KBAC is pleased to join the Friends of the WMU Libraries, the WMU Visiting Scholars and Artists Program, and the Gwen Frostic School of Art to host visiting artist Mary Heebner who will present an exhibition, lecture, and workshop.

Mary Heebner and Simplemente Maria Press: A Selection of Artist’s Books and the Paintings That Inspired Them
March 7—28, 2014
Opening reception March 7 during Art Hop, 6 to 9 p.m.

Mary Heebner came to the book arts by way of her practice as a painter. All of the artist’s books created under her imprint ‘simplemente maria press’ originate with a series of drawings and paintings. Living in Santa Barbara, California, she has traveled extensively with her husband, photographer Macduff Everton, and these experiences often inspire her work. The result is an eclectic style, specific to real experiences on the road and in the studio, expressed in well-crafted objects that are tactile, sensual, and firmly rooted in  content. Prototypes: At Play with Possibilities
Instructor: Mary Heebner / Fee: $75
Sat., March 8, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch break

In this workshop we will explore how content can inspire the structure of a book, by making small prototypes. We will parse out individual ideas and discover how, through the preliminary mapping out of possible forms, images, and typefaces, you can begin a new book project. All the fun of making a prototype lies in playing around with possibilities. Come with inspiration, a short written description, a collection of images or poems, outlines, diagrams, special materials, or a collaborative idea and we will work together to find your book’s first form.

Mary Heebner’s work as a painter and book artist has often been inspired by her travels, including trips to Iceland, Chilean Patagonia, and Angkor Wat in Cambodia. In this lecture Heebner will show a survey of her creative work and talk about its sources.
