It hardly needs to be said, but we feel very lucky to work at the KBAC! We get to share our love of books, printing, paper, art, and creative writing to youth as well as adults through classes, exhibitions, readings, and more. On top of that we get to make really cool stuff!
Sometimes we are commissioned to make things for local businesses and organizations, like our Love Where You Live books for the Kalamazoo Community Foundation. More often we make things as a result of brainstorming ideas for products that we think would go well in our online and in-person stores. Here are some items we’ve recently produced:
We’ve been working on a line of greeting cards that, while very simple and graphic, pack a punch with a fun message. There are eleven in the line currently and we plan to continue to grow the options. Are there any ideas you’d like to see on a card? Let us know.
How about journals that highlight cities across the globe for the would-be traveler, or these that remind us of all the things to love about frozen treats? For beer lovers that take notes on their home brews, there is this beauty. We’ve got one for coffee lovers too! These casebound books are protected on the spine with heavy duty book cloth and feature letterpress printed cover art.
We also make a lot of handmade paper around here. Making paper suitable for sale in our store is quite different from making paper in a quick elementary school class. For one thing, there aren’t any holes in the paper from little fingers! Beyond that, the handmade sheets must be evenly pulled, nicely pressed, in a variety of colors, and sometimes with beautiful inclusions. We always have lots of nice paper to choose from in our store.
We make cool stuff throughout the year, not just at holiday time. Please check our online store. whenever you need something well-made and unique. If you plan to give our handmade products as gifts this year, please place your order by December 18 to be sure it arrives on time. Or you can visit us in person. We hope to see you!
Happy holidays,
Jeff, Katie, and Lorrie
