Construction on the Kalamazoo Avenue reconstruction project is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 13, marking the start of one of the largest investments in downtown Kalamazoo in decades.
Throughout construction, one lane of Kalamazoo Avenue will remain open, although traffic patterns will shift as work progresses.
If you're visiting a business or destination within the construction zone, access will remain available throughout construction. Most downtown destinations can be reached from Rose Street, where parking and access to businesses will continue to be maintained.
Please note that dates below are weather-dependent and may change as construction progresses.
July 13–14
Traffic control devices, construction signage, and other preliminary work will be installed. No pavement removal is anticipated during this period.
July 15 through early August
Crews will begin removing pavement to access and replace underground utilities, including drinking water, stormwater, electrical, and communication infrastructure.
July 20
Consumers Energy is scheduled to begin installing infrastructure that will support relocating overhead electrical lines underground. Work will begin at Park Street and move east toward Rose Street.
Late July (date to be announced)
The intersection of Kalamazoo Avenue and South Church Street is expected to close for approximately one week while utility work is completed beneath the intersection. We'll provide at least seven days' notice before this closure begins.
