Special Events

From Art Hop to poetry readings, guest artist presentations, special workshops and themed exhibits the KBAC offers a wide array of public events year round. In 2009 the KBAC began The Illustrated Accordion, an exhibition presenting the art of accordion style books that attracts an international range of entries. Our annual April Fool’s Day Edible Book Festival invites the community to share edible tributes to books. KBAC Guest Artists exhibitions, lectures and workshops have included Shawn Sheehy, a master of paper folding and pop-up books, and Donna and Peter Thomas, internationally known creators of miniature books and authors of two books on techniques for creating miniature books.

Each year the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center (KBAC) sponsors a non-juried exhibition The Illustrated Accordion, showing in the KBAC Gallery in late spring. Open to all emerging and established artists, this exhibition focuses on books created in the accordion form. All media, variations, and interpretations of this style of book are accepted and included in the exhibition.

The Edible Book Festival

The KBAC Edible Book Festival is part of an international April Fools celebration of the art of the book. It happens each year at libraries and book arts centers around the world, with participants in 18 countries including Australia, Brazil, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, New Zealand, and Russia.

The entries are beyond description so visit our Edible Book Gallery. For information on Edible Book events elsewhere visit the International Edible Book site.

Guest Artists

Acclaimed artists bring their talents from the many corners of the country to the KBAC to present demonstrations, lectures, exhibits, and special classes. With them, we have learned how to make mono prints with silicone caulk, the art of the pop-up book, and the history of miniature books, just to name a few. Don’t miss out on these special opportunities to connect with amazing artists, writers, and scholars. Read about the guest artists and events we’ve had in past years in our Guest Artists archive.
