John Kollig: DADA Prints
Sept. 10-25
Opening reception Sept 10, 6–9 p.m. during Art Hop.
Gallery hours: Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or by appointment
John Kollig, the first KBAC Resident Artist for 2010, has been working in our studio since January to create a series of printed images.
Kollig received his MFA in painting from Western Michigan University and has exhibited his work widely in Michigan. In 2009 he was invited to participate in the Seventh Annual Biennale of Art in Florence, Italy.
About this new work Kollig says:
“The images, all appropriated, are used in combinations of monotype, transfer, collage, and drawing. The process of using mixed media was through intuition and random selection. Nothing was planned. The only criteria for choosing an image were my personal taste and aesthetic. The whole series was worked simultaneously. There is no narrative or context for this work that I was consciously thinking.”

Please join us to celebrate this fresh new body of work.
Joel Craig and Arra Lynn Ross present readings from their work on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010. Broadsides featuring the poet's work will be created by KBAC artists Jeff Evergreen and Katie Platte and will be available during the event for sale and signing along with other works by the poets. Broadsides from other "Poets in Print" events and other book arts creations are also available for sale. This event is free and refreshments are served. Doors open at 6:30.
Joel Craig’s chapbook Shine Tomorrow is available from Lost Horse Press. His poems have appeared in Lungfull!, GutCult, A Public Space, Zoland Poetry, Rabbit Light Movies, Fence, and others. He is the poetry editor at MAKE: A Literary Magazine, and co-founder and curator of the Danny’s Reading Series—where he lives—in Chicago.
Arra Lynn Ross is the author of the book Seedlip and Sweet Apple (Milkweed Editions, 2010), and has published work in Harper’s Ferry, Spoon River Poetry Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Alimentum, and Linebreak. Her work has also appeared on Verse Daily and the Academy of American Poets' Poem-a-Day. She earned her PhD in creative writing from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and teaches creative writing at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan.
Guest Artists: Peter and Donna Thomas
September 23-25
Book artists Peter and Donna Thomas, the authors and illustrators of More Making Books By Hand, visit us this summer in their custom-made gypsy van "bookmobile" to present workshops and a lecture. Renowned as creators of miniature and artists’ books since 1977, they have produced over 125 limited editions and 300 one-of-a-kind books, found in collections around the globe. They are active in the Miniature Books Society and the Friends of Dard Hunter and reside in Santa Cruz, California.
Lecture--Dodge Trucks or Gypsy Wagons: The Literary Book as a Work of Art
Kalamazoo Public Library, Van Duesen Room, 315 S. Rose Street
Thurs., Sept. 23, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
“A literary book is to our Dodge truck as an Artists’ Book is to our Gypsy Wagon. One gets you somewhere practical the other takes you somewhere magical.” —Peter Thomas
Peter Thomas talks about artists’ books, sharing examples of many books he has produced over the years in collaboration with his wife. He will also sing a song or two on his ukulele book (yes, you read that correctly!).
